AI-powered solutions to navigate and access Korea's startup funding programs

The K-Startup Grand Challenge (KSGC) is Korea's flagship government-backed accelerator program for foreign startups looking to enter, incorporate, and scale-up in the Korean market. Limited to non-Korean nationals, the 11-month program is conducted 100% in English, is an opportunity to receive non-dilutive funding, and is a direct plug into the Korean market.
Inaugurated in 2016, it's hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS), organized by the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development (KISED), and operated by the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (GCCEI).
The program continues to grow and expand each year. To date, the program has received 18,900 applications, produced 449 graduates, supported the formation of 225 Korean entities, and runs at a 42:1 competition ratio. As of 2026, KSGC expanded participation eligibility to include international students. Undergraduate and graduate foreign passport holders studying in Korea can read about the new track here.
The Main KSGC track is open to overseas (pre-) startups founded and currently led by non-Korean nationals. Out of the total applicant pool, eighty (80) teams will be selected to participate in Phase 1; forty (40) for Phase 2; and twenty (20) teams for Phase 3. The eight (8) finalists must be able to commit to the 11-month program.
Eligible startups should be incorporated for no more than seven years, or no more than ten years for new & emerging industry sectors.
While prior incorporation is not required, teams must demonstrate a readiness to explore or expand in the Korean market through the following:
Each year, KSGC selects priority sectors in high-impact fields. The priority sectors for 2026 are:
Note: The following individuals and teams are ineligible to apply.
Applications open annually, typically in the spring. Check the official K-Startup Grand Challenge site for current cycle dates, eligibility details, and application requirements.
Teams are required to submit basic information about their startup, status, and motivation for applying. In addition, teams must submit a 2-minute pitch video with an optional pitch deck.
As of 2025, applicants are now able to participate through a hybrid format. Meaning, participants can join the program remotely while maintaining operations in their home countries, significantly lowering the barrier to entry. "Core Weeks" consist of two weeks per month for remote participants to come to Korea for events, meetings, and networking gatherings for the benefit of their startup.
The 11-month program is divided into three phases: Market Exploration, Market Entry, and Market Growth in Korea.
The KSGC offers nearly ₩800 million KRW in combined government funding for competition participants and grand prize winners. The financial support includes travel and accommodation stipends, participation grants for the top 40 teams, equity-free prize money for top 20 teams, and commercialization growth grants for the eight (8) best-performing startups.
The eight (8) finalists will also receive free office space, 3 year of continued support, mentorship, business incorporation assistance, collaboration opportunities with large corporations and mid-sized enterprises, and connections with investors.
Finally, team members of the top 8 teams also receive a recommendation letter to apply for the D-8-4 Startup Visa, valid for two years.
Since its launch in 2016, KSGC has supported the creation of 195 domestic corporations and the issuance of 364 startup visas. For teams that incorporate in Korea, KSGC effectively serves as an accelerator into the broader Korean government funding and venture capital ecosystem, including follow-on MSS grant programs and TIPS. The program also opens doors to corporate partnerships and pathways to long-term residency.
KSGC is valuable because it is globally recognized and founder-friendly, provides early Korean market exposure, is conducted in English, reduces financial burden through stipends, offers accelerated access to Korea's corporate sector, and serves as a strong credential for future funding opporutnities. For many founders, KSGC is the clearest and strongest way to establish a foothold in Korea.
